End of year Bake-A-Thon!

With it being the last week of school, preschool, seminary and H.S Graduation...my kitchen was in a constant state of cooking! Cupcakes to help celebrate Colton's "pretend" b-day at school , since his birthday always falls in the Summer--we did red, white, and blue for a July theme!
The cake I decorated with all the leftover goodies this week... it was for Sterling's end of year potluck
The cookie bouquets I made for Dan's seminary seniors, and a few other graduating friends!
Because of this our kitchen was in a constant state of chaos this week! Look out BELOW...

The Last Days of School!

It being the last day of school, with it raining and Sterling's water day at preschool cancelled. I thought I would take the moment to celebrate this momentous day and share a few specimens of the LARGE amount of papers, drawing, journals, and projects that came home this week! (I wish I had a paper recycling box, that was free and easy)This is one of Colton's first journal entries. He was right on track for a first grader (capitalization, complete sentence, punctuation)...but notice how short, amount of misspelling, and style of handwriting.
This was Colton's journal entry about spring break. Check out the length (they had to add more papers for his journal every day as he was writing more then there was space for), he had a title for the entry (I cut off), and very few misspelled words, as well as his own self corrections and a The End--like a story.
Here is one of his very last journal entries. I am impressed particularly with his neatness of handwriting. It looks as good as a teachers, when we (teachers) had to take handwriting classes in college, and practiced on lined paper. Not bad for a boy! Colton is a neat and precise little guy! Yeah Colton...our new 2nd Grader!!!!!
I picked 2 of my favorite journal entries for Sterling! He had much less journal entries..but it made for a shorter show-and-tell that day for me (much needed this week with all their work coming home).
This one is a picture of Yoda--ha ha ha. I have to giggle so hard at the ears on Yoda and his green light saber. Can you tell the boys are into Star Wars around here?

Last, but not least...Is his journal entry about the chick dying. I wondered out of all the boys if this little experience had affected him at all, because sometimes he can be reserved or react differently than most children w/ serious things. But, this journal entry gave me validity that it had made an impression on him, as he rarely wrote about things that took place at home in his journal (he preferred holidays, spiders, blocks, and things at preschool). You have to look carefully at it as the picture on the other side is 'bleeding' through, but he did color his (brown) and Ryland's (blue) eyes the right colors to differentiate between the two.

Sterling is obsessed with calendars, dates and looking forward to events that are upcoming. He knows that he will be a kindergartner on August the 7--not a day sooner or later! Ha ha-I love that little chump!

I'm Engaged!!!!

Dan and I got engaged TODAY...exactly 8 years ago!!!!Alicia and Dan goofing off w/ my cousins bridal shower veil!
Dan had waited so patiently for 2.5 days from the time he asked me, to when I officially answered! I remember calling his mom and she got emotional and told us that it was the best anniversary present we could have given her and Doug. (BTW-- Happy Anniversary Gma/Gpa today!)

Squaw Peak, the exact spot Dan purposed...look closely, and you can see the actual rock we were sitting on

I know you want all the juicy details...so lets start from the beginning.

Dan and I after one of our shifts teaching at the MTC

When I met Dan there was allot of things going on in my heart and head. I had recently come home from a mission and had a broken heart. The guy I could have married before my mission had married one of my closest friends ( they still ARE my great friends). Mind you, this could be a story in itself, but to make it short-- I will cut down the details. The guy and I had made no promises about waiting for each other while I served an 18 month mission. I knew that if it was right it would be right when I got home. It was an answer to my prayers that it took care of itself--HOWEVER that does not mean that it did not hurt me, even though I was grateful for their happiness. I was not ready to open my heart.I was certain my hubby was not at BYU, and that I needed to pursue my career, and get going on to the next phase in life. I had also started dating someone who I thought had all the qualities I needed and wanted (EFY counselor, RICKS football player, owned a truck, had horses, he COULD DANCE and lift me over his head, loved country, played the guitar, gave me fresh flowers and poetry, took me to the temple, and was a great friend) BUT it was just not there, and I was trying to get out of that relationship...that is when I met Dan.

Y Mountain at BYU-Our first date!

Dan came into my life with gentleness and patience, both things I REALLY needed at that time. Even when he knew by our 2nd date that I was the one (I will spare his embarrassment from reading his journal entry for now) he knew that I had to have that same confirmation, and was in NO RUSH to tell me or push me into marriage.

We met in August of 1999. I got hired to work at the Missionary Training Center. Part of my training was to be paired with a senior teacher for 2 days--to learn the ropes and get suggestions. My partner happened to be Brother Sorensen. I remember when I first saw him my heart did a little leap b/c he was so good looking! However, I went on pushing any dating thoughts away--after all we were in the MTC (it was hard to realize I was allowed to think that way there, now that I was home). Well, the 2nd day as we were going our separate ways Dan got the impression that if he did not ask me out, he would be missing out on something. He turned around and called my name, and then asked if could do something sometime. I gave him my full name (as we had been referring to each other as brother and sister) so he could call the BYU directory and get my phone number, I thought "that was flattering, it has been a long time since someone has asked me out without just hanging out first... But it probably will never happen--too much effort with calling the BYU directory). Dan called a few days later and we had a date to hike the Y (see picture above) that coming weekend! We connected spiritually..something I had yet to find (not that any of the others were less spiritual, we were just progressing differently while I dated them). Our conversation that night was 'deeper' than most get to on a couple of dates. We never talked about US or even thought of us as a couple really...we just expressed what ,we, as individuals wanted in our futures. It was relaxed and there was no pressures, fakeness, or pretenses. Dan shook my hand and we did not go out again for quite a few weeks--we both had other obligations and dates to attend too, that had already been planned!

Alicia reading her scriptures, writing in her journal, and contemplating the more serious things in her life at Arches National Park-March 2000-While her and Dan were taking a "break"

When we did reconnect again it was quickly apparent that we preferred each others companionship. He was the "eye of the storm" for me. I appreciated his simpleness, stability, maturity, and sound reasoning. So I found myself with him often, even though I was insistent that we still date other people (at least me) the majority of the time we dated. I think that enabled me options out, and back-up plans in case it did not work.

Halloween Costume Party -October 1999-Dan (skeleton)and I (nun) were in the finalist for the costume contest!
I've always had a VERY hard time, since the time I was an infant, making decisions as to what I really wanted. For instance, I would cry for my bottle and then throw it on the ground, then cry for my bottle and throw it on the ground again! You can only imagine how HARD it was for me to make decisions when they really mattered (i.e. mission, who to marry). I took Dan through the ringer. Not only did we take a complete month 'off' from each other--no phone calls, dating, emails, etc. I also took him to have an interview w/ my mission president (whom I was very close too) after he had already talked with my dad, I went and visited with his mission president, counseled w/ my bishop, went in after hours to visit with my marriage prep teacher, hours and hours of conversations with home and Heavenly Father, and trips away to re-group. Our relationship hit a point at about 8 months, where it either needed to progress or we needed to let each other go and remain life-long friends.

Group date for Preference Dance-Fall 1999-Dan and I are the couple 2nd in on the left

Even though Dan had received numerous confirmations, with me doubting so much, he finally decided it was time for him to date other people as well, and his feelings began to change towards me! I PANICKED! I thought living with him would be hard, living without him was even harder. For the first time I had a confirmation that I was to be with him and it did not matter when or where (besides the temple) but I WANTED to marry HIM. I was not forced, was not manipulated, was not scared I would not have other chances...I simply chose him. I always wanted him in my life. So I told Dan.

Fall Preference 1999

I realized that I had committed to our relationship and things were getting to the point where he was going to purpose. It did not mean that doubts never plagued me again--almost as soon as I committed to our relationship all the doubts came flooding back. HOWEVER this time I had a peaceful, spiritual confirmation that this was a very good thing that I could fall back on, and remember. Sometimes I kick myself for making this sooo hard. Our family came very quickly for us and I feel like I spent so much time worrying during our dating days, that I did not completely enjoy or appreciate this FREE-love dating time. No real obligations, monetary responsibilities, and ANY hours I wanted!!!

I KNEW the week he was going to purpose that something was going to happen--I could feel it. I prayed fervently ALL week that the answer would be clear to me when the time arrived.Dan and our friend Brian doing the dishes for our apartment after my birthday--soo soo hard!
Arrived it did! On Friday May 19, 2000 Dan picked me up from Draper Elementary school, where I was doing my student teaching for kindergarten, and we headed up to Park City. I had never been there, and it was cool to walk around the shops and see this infamous city! I remember eating at a gourmet pizza shop in a corner shop and Dan saying--"one day our kids will say this is where our parents ate the night the got engaged." Did he really just say that? OUR KIDS?!!! Then as we were walking around we were rocking on some rocking chairs and talking about how one day we would be sitting on rocking chairs watching the kids run around outside--there it was again...OUR KIDS!!! We found the sweetest stuffed animal turtle (I have a thing for turtles) with the saddest, but cutest eyes, while we were shopping AND years later for Christmas Dan tracked the turtle down, and bought me one so I could always remember that night every time I looked at it! (yes, he can be a romantic)

Dan making breakfast for me and ALL my roommates when we were not feeling well-I know, I should have married him right then!!

Well-to Dan's credit he did try talking me into a jewelry shop to look at rings that night...but I declined. We were done with Park City and were headed back to Provo when we took a little detour up to squaw peak just as the sun was setting! We found a wild sunflower field with a big rock right in the middle, that overlooked the valley and the lake. It was an ABSOLUTE perfect and beautiful setting. To think that I wanted my boyfriend to ask me to marry him at a football game with it written on an airplane flying overhead when I was a freshman makes me laugh (hey--if that is how it happened for you, some people really dig it) BUT this was for me! We sat there for a little bit and then Dan was on his knee. I really wish I had written down what he had said (he always has had a way with words), but it went along the lines of: I am trying to go to the celestial kingdom and I have chosen you to go with me. I would be honored if you would be my wife...will you marry me Alicia?. I was speechless (believe it or not) I started to cry. This was it! I wanted to say yes, but that seemed too easy (heaven forbid something be easy). I sat and thought and thought. I hugged him and started making him make me promises, like: promise me we will have a wrap around porch, promise me we will go camping every weekend as a family. He simply smiled and told me he would try to give me all those things.

During this time a little family had pulled up and the kid was on the dad's shoulders and the wife was next to him. Dan told me to look over there and then told me that is all he wanted. That is all I really wanted too! He asked if I needed time and he left me for a bit. He came back and asked me how I felt. I told him I felt like saying yes, but I needed some more time. Dan said that was fine, but just made me promise NOT to talk to ANYONE about this but Heavenly Father.

Let the games begin, a ward party at a bounce house place...bring it on Dan (Incidentally Dan was not a part of our ward!)
I kept that promise and found myself in the temple, and taking long walks. We had a family function and I wanted to yell and scream it to my sister...but I didn't. It was right, it had always been right. By Sunday I was starting to plan the wedding, I just needed to let him in on the plans. After a busy day as both of us met church calling obligations, we went to his apartment and I looked at him and said YES! and then proceeded to write my soon-to-be new name on his dry erase board: Alicia Ann Sorensen
Has a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Who do you think won...umm that would be me, after I yanked him down-thank you very much! Bounce house Fun!

Then the phone calls began and our wedding was underway!

Sometimes it seems like so long ago. This past Monday I remembered that it was the 'original' day that Dan had asked me to marry him, and I looked over at the couch full of our four children during Family Home Evening, and I had to smile. It IS so right. I AM in love. There is NOT doubts. It REALLY was what we wanted. I am GLAD Dan is patient.

The whole Bungee Jumping crew on a group date/fun friend night

I got my ring AFTER we were engaged, on our 2nd date to the Y--we hiked it one more time, except this time-- Dan had something very expensive, very pretty, and very meaningful in his pocket to give me!

Week Synopsis 5/12 - 5/18

Monday May 12-The aftermath of Mothers Day..it's back to work! The week started out as BUSY as all others!I cut Ryland and Colton's hair after school. That night for family home evening we took baths and then got in the car for a drive...down to Grandma's--we stayed in Phoenix b/c we had early dentist appointments the next morning.
Tuesday May 13- Colton and Dan were the first patients in the office on Tuesday morning. Colton had to be sedated for some serious amounts of work-he had a tooth strategically pulled (to make room), space maintainers tightened, cavity re-filled, a bar placed behind his lower teeth to prevent them growing backwards, some filing....and such! Dan had one filling redone. Colton slept the rest of the day, the medicine really works on him. I told Grandma the next time I have a bad sleeper baby I am coming to the office for some of the "good stuff". I went in later that afternoon to get some sealants redone....and then I went straight from their to the implant specialist, to check up on the tooth that got pulled and put back in--so far so good...one more year before we can crown the thing! While Dan and Colton were in the office I took the other 3 kids to the outlet stores (really just Osh Kosh). It was time to buy summer clothes (swimsuit, swim shirt, tennis shoes, sandals, flip flops, 3 pairs of husky shorts, one pair of Ryland shorts, Dacie swim cover and three sun hats). Like I thought, Dan was not too positive about it, but the purchases always have to be large when I only get to cheap stores every so often. I have to do it all at once, rather than break it up into monthly! Most of Dacie's sun hats I bought with straps as I figured she would rip them off..but she surprised me with LOVING them--she certainly strutted her stuff as she pranced around the playground after (see pictures above and below).
Funny story for you: Despite the pictures from that trip it was WINDY and raining (very rare)as we went in the store, and came out to perfect weather. I pulled the double stroller out of the van and set it up. I went around to un-buckle Ryland and Dacie, and when I went to put them in the stroller--it was GONE!! I looked everywhere and could not find it. I thought surely no one swiped a stroller that quickly without me hearing a thing?!! I even asked the lady parked right in front of me who was sitting and chatting on her cell the whole time. No luck, just as I was about to give up a man in a pick-up pulled up and asked if I was looking for a stroller. He took me clear across the parking lot (huge outlet stores do not make small lots)--around a school bus, and lo and behold the stroller had BLOWN all the way over there and snapped the front wheels right off! Replacement wheels for the $200 plus stroller are $30--but I found the same stroller on craigslist for $40-with parts I can't re-order! Sweet!
The outlet stores DO NOT have carts--so the store was absolutely TERRORIZED while I did my BIG shopping. They were so kind and good to my children, and helped me with them. We were one of the few in the store. It has been a LONG time since people have been so positive about me and my children in stores. It was refreshing and they bought themselves a devoted customer. Being stroller-less made the playground and getting lunch all that more exciting as well!
As always it was hard to leave Grandma and Grandpa's to come back to real life--but we did pretty late in the evening. Not after Ryland and Sterling talked Grandpa into taking them to the park however, AND then to repay him for his kindness...Sterling dumped his and Grandma's pill boxes down the toilet along with a necklace and Gma's two earrings. Gma and Gpa spent a good portion of the next day fixing their toilet and replacing their medicines! AAH! Sterling has toilets to clean next time we are down there.

Wednesday May 14- Is my thumb broken or not? I wonder for most of the day. I landed on it in the softball games last friday and it is getting worse rather than better. I feel silly--it is just a thumb, so I will let it go a few more days. I almost went into urgent care when Dan got home from work, but decided not too--never realized how much I use my thumb in every day living (ouch to diaper changes)! Dan went to play basketball with the guys that night

Thursday May 15- With the cooler weather and serious breeze, something is stirring up my allergies today! I have not stopped sneezing since I woke up. My nose is a constant flow. A leftover prescription of Zyrtec helps me survive. I had serious amounts of energy in the morning and mopped the floors, emptied the dishwasher, vacuumed the house, dressed the kids AND did their hair, folded and put away clothes...and took a shower before my visiting teachers (Cami Raban & Tara Trezise) came at 10am. It was a great day! Cami's son Bryson was having such a good time with the boys we let him stay a bit longer after his mom left for a playdate. That night the boys had a softball game at 5:30pm before Dan got home..so the 5 of us had a windy experience at the fields. Not so traumatic as last time (Ryland's fall). Dan met us at the fields and took the kids home while I finally went into the urgent care to get it looked at- splint on, naproxyn prescription, and x-rays ordered.
Dacie's newest toy--the trashcan and the contents in it, after raiding the trash it is onto the dishwasher, then mommy's toilet--LOVE this busy stage!Check out her necklace she puts on every day, only to grab her baby doll and carry it around-I have a GIRL!! Yeah!!
Friday May16- I take my friends (Julie Hoggard) two little boys in the morning for our babysitting swap, since it is her daughters special day at preschool. Dacie got shoved into the table corner and has a NICE ol' lump, bruise and cut. She is going to be tough!
I get a phone call from my friend (Carrie Reay) who is a teacher at Colton's school telling me he just won a bike for a reward drawing they have for reading and computer test taking (AR). I am jumping up and down and call Dan at work. I can only imagine that Colton is having the best day ever! I get a call around 2pm from the school asking me to come get him--he as 101.7 fever AND he has a bike! Colton was soo soo sick to even really enjoy the bike. By the time I got to the school his fever was at 102. I got an appointment with the pediatrician b/c he was so sad and worried about not being able to go camping with Daddy and Gpa, for the Fathers and Sons campout. I got a last minute babysitter and ran to the pediatrician, pharmacy, and x-ray place! Colton had 103 fever when we arrived at the office, and the Doctor pretty much told Colton he was not going anywhere. I promised him movies and treats at home--Colton was too sick to care at this point. He tested positive for strep and has some blood in his urine that is being tested further.
I got home in enough time to get Ryland, Sterling, Dan and Gpa off for camping. Really Gpa provides everything but the clothes and sleeping bags, it is kind of a nice set-up. Gpa even left money for me to get Colton some dinner-what a good Gpa! I cancelled my dinner out with friends, a possible movie, and softball game-- we just hung out at home! Dacie and I just sat out on the porch and watched the sun set in the swing. It was such a great way to re-group for me. Dacie would snuggle and then get on the grass and play--Dacie is growing up so quickly. She is at such a busy stage right now. She really goes from one thing to the next in minutes. It was a peaceful moment and a good thing. Colton threw up twice, every time his fever would spike.Saturday May 17- Colton woke up a NEW KID! There was no signs of sickness. We LOVE antibiotics (what on earth did the pioneers do?) However, he still spent all morning on the sick couch watching cartoons. Dacie and I went outside and started yard work! We mowed the lawns and started spraying for weeds when the campers got back home.

The campers had a great time and were full of stories of losing Ryland, shooting shot guns and making their shoulders sore, playing a 'baseball' game, eating yummy breakfast, and crying OUT all night long (Dan and Grandpa did not enjoy that part of it!) The boys also came back covered in these FUNKY bites (check out the pictures below) Luckily after baths, and some Benadryl there are no signs of them today!

Sterling made it home in time to go to one of his favorite girlfriends' b-day party (Emma Hoggard). He was pretty concerned about making it back in time. He came home from the party covered in green icing, and with more party favors then the present he brought! Good times!
At home Dan and Gpa were finishing up the fence and drip line for the garden. After Gpa left, Dan and I worked into the evening weed whacking, sweeping, and spraying for more weeds. I really do love working outside...if the kids cooperate.
We ended the evening by attending an outside wedding open house at a friends (the Hartley's).The kids jumped on the trampoline and we ate some great food by tiki torch, as the cool evening weather and breeze settled in. It was a good ending to a busy day!

I asked Daddy to take pictures and these were the 2 he returned with (no tent, no fire, etc.)! They are not even the campsite, but where they went shooting the gun off the side of the road...I hear Gpa got a few on his camera, I'll have to steal .

Where Colton spent his Fathers and Sons campout...on the couch w/ his magic strep juice!

The Funky bites...look closely in his hair--they were EVERYWHERE!
Bites on Ryland's head and eyes!
Sterling's hair is long and thick so his head was protected from bites, but not his eyes, forehead and nose!
Sunday May 18- Last nights sleep was good! It was another busy Sunday at church. Dan had seminary graduation this evening BUT it was a sad evening for Dan. In training they had announced that it was at 7:00pm--well the time had been changed to 6pm, without Dan being made awareof it, so Dan walked in about 40 minutes late-- only to hear the closing stake presidents remarks. Dan was heartbroken. He was embarrassed, frustrated and felt extremely sorry for the students he had graduating. He came home welled up with tears (he is NEVER like that). He called his students and the high councilman to apologize..but he still feels awful. What's done is done and graduation is something you can;t go back and do later--his seniors are done too, so he won't see them again! Darn it! He is feeling better, but went to bed early. I am so sad for him! Well-we hope this week starts out a little better than that-3 days and counting for Dan having to wake up early!! The boys are done with school on Friday and T-ball Thursday-then what?
Some smiles for you to end on...Dacie's cool hair-do after pigtails
